like a quiet week in syria

Finally the UN and UNHCR has released a report absolving Israel of the tragic death of the baby of a BBC photographer.  An incident that drew immediate and vicious condemnation of Israel from all directions.

It turns out that a misdirected Palestinian missile was the culprit.

Most interesting are the statistics quoted in the article:

“According to the report, 174 Palestinians were killed in Gaza during Operation Pillar of Defense, at least 168 of them by the Israeli army. Of those casualties, 101 “are believed to be civilians,” including 33 children and 13 women. Six civilians, including three children, “may have been killed by rockets fired by Palestinian armed groups that landed in Gaza,” the report states.”

Obviously all deaths are tragic and the best outcome for everyone is an end to the conflict, but these numbers are much less than a quiet month in Syria in the past 2 years.

As a reminder, an estimated Syrian 80,000 civilians have been killed by Syrian Government forces in the past few weeks.  Including numerous massacres of towns and villages.

Yet the UN, UNHCR, UNSC, the Arab League, numerous human rights groups and the media have been mostly silent in the wake of this carnage.  And there has certainly not been any calls for emergency UNSC meetings to condemn the Syrian government, unlike the daily calls against Israel.
